When I joined the Portsea SLSC Community 5 years ago through the Part-Time Bronze Program, I was taken back by the degree of camaraderie that existed between members of all ages. This supportive and encouraging environment was what inspired me to apply for the Education Subcommittee and is the element of the Club that I still value the most today. My acceleration from a Bronze holder to Club Captain stands as testament to the level of belief, trust and opportunity this Club invests in its young members. I would encourage all members to become as involved as you possibly can, as the skills you learn and friendships you make are truly invaluable. Through this mindset, I have developed role models, mentors and supporters that I know will help me to fulfil my aspirations as Club Captain. The notion of member inclusion and engagement is something that I plan to place a great emphasis on in my role. I endeavour to ensure that there are relevant and enticing opportunities available for members of all ages as I want the Club to continue to be a place for everyone.
The recent expansion of our membership base, in conjunction with our new facility has laid strong foundations for the growth and prosperity of our Club. I aspire to continue the excellent work of the previous Club Captain through ensuring that our Club fosters an environment that encourages participation, provides pathways for personal development, and focuses on member retention. I believe that this strong focus on member retention, particularly in the sphere of youth, is of paramount importance as our youth are the backbone of our Club when it comes to lifesaving. Having spent most of time in the Club heavily immersed in the realm of Education, I believe that a strong education program is the key to developing competent, confident and passionate lifesavers. Although our Club is about far more than just lifesaving, overall, I want to ensure that our ultimate focus remains on education and lifesaving in order to uphold our Club’s mission of patrolling and protecting the beach.
