CLUB STRUCTURE & TEAM

OUR TEAM

GENERAL COMMITTEE

President

Matt Mahon

I was lucky enough to join Portsea SLSC and get my Bronze Medallion in 1987 at a Bronze Camp run by Rick Berry, Charlie Schall and many other Portsea legends. The Club was a big part of my life through my late teens and 20’s, lifeguarding for four seasons through Uni. I remained involved throughout my 20’s, mainly through my interest in surf ski paddling and competing for the Club, and patrolling my favourite beach. A career, kids and other interests took me away for a few years before returning as our own children got involved in our Nipper program ten years ago. While I still enjoy patrolling with the Masochists, it’s the fun and friendships that make the Club a special place for me.

Vice President

Brett Croft

I am pleased to continue as Vice President and the Junior Development Director role. I have a great appreciation of what a modern surf life-saving club needs to be in order to be successful (and sustainable). At the heart of this is protecting the beach going public and as such, I continue to patrol as an active member of the Point Break Patrol and continue to represent the club at Masters at State and National levels each year. All of my family are actively involved in the club and I see it as a fantastic place for members of all ages to develop new skills and for us to positively influence the lives of our younger members. Our club is made up of some amazing people – of all ages – and spending time with them – either on the beach, out the back or on the deck at night is what makes our club so great.

Secretary

Rob Mellor

My first involvement in the club was through my kids’ participation in the Nipper program about 15 years ago when we found that sailing lessons were not burning off enough of their energy. I went through Henry Kiss’ part-time bronze program soon after and before I knew it the entire family had become deeply involved through Nippers, educational camps, instructing, patrolling, competition (including a women’s club champion), lifeguarding and a variety of OC and Committee roles. I joined the Committee in 2015 in the role of Club Secretary, I patrol with the Masochists and compete with the Masters’ competition team and can’t wait to get back down to the beach and into the water.

Club Captain

I joined the Portsea SLSC Community 5 years ago and I was taken back by the degree of camaraderie that existed between members of all ages. This supportive and encouraging environment was what inspired me to apply for the Education Subcommittee and is the element of the Club that I still value the most today.

My progression from an Education Subcommittee member, to Education Director to Club Captain stands as testament to the level of belief, trust and opportunity this Club invests in its young members. I would encourage all members to become as involved as you possibly can, as the skills you learn and friendships you make are truly invaluable.

Director

Jacqui Hart

Hi, I’m Jacqui Hart and I am taking on the role of Education Director this season. I have been a Portsea member for all 23 years of my life and have been involved in the club from nippers through to patrolling. Previously, I have been the Nipper Instructor Manager and more recently a member of the Operational Committee as the Membership and Leadership Development officer and a patrol captain for Unkle Tyes. I am excited to be a new member of the committee and take on the challenge of organising the club’s education programs within the constraints of COVID-19. I can’t wait to be involved in all programs, in whatever capacity they run this year, to meet all our participants and assist them to run to the best possible outcome!

Director

James Nola

I joined the club back in 2011 after doing my Bronze, I became a patrol captain of the Usual Suspects a few years later.

Director

Andrew May

Hello! I am Andrew May, more universally known as Andy May or the club’s Equipment Director. I have been involved with the lifesaving club since attaining my Bronze Medallion in 2017 and was previously the club’s First Aid Director on the Operational Committee. I am actively involved in patrolling, water-safety and education programs throughout the club, serving as the Patrol Captain of Moe’s Tavern, the Water Safety Coordinator of the Portsea Swim Classic and Pier 2 Perignon swims, as well as a Co-Chief Instructor of Bronze Camp. Whilst I work as a lifeguard along the rest of Peninsula over summer, I always return back home to Portsea, entranced by the notorious surf, ever-present legends and the chance to give back to the club, which has done so much for me over the years.

Director

Priscilla Brown

Hi, I am Priscilla Brown, but many of you may remember me as Prill Barrington! I was heavily involved in the Surf Club, having gone right through from Nippers to Lifeguarding and even a couple of years on the Committee. The better part of the past 10 years has seen me work interstate and overseas, however, I am now settled back in Melbourne and keen to again be part of the Club that I loved so much. I am looking forward to catching up with so many familiar faces!

Director

Sue Crow

I am delighted to have been appointed to the Portsea SLSC Committee. I am of an age when females were not permitted to participate in surf lifesaving or get our bronze so I was confined to the beach jealously watching the boys have all the fun. Thankfully times have changed and I look forward to sharing my experiences working as CEO of Women’s Cricket Australia, Softball Australia and Netball Victoria and also as a former board member of VicHealth and Cricket Victoria. I am a passionate open water swimmer and have participated in many events at Portsea and am equally passionate about providing opportunities for women and girls. My daughter Kim had a wonderful time at Portsea as a nipper and Junior several years ago. She was well supported by clubbies at the time and I am keen to “give back”.

Director

Sas McNamara

I am very excited to be the Membership and Leadership Development Director this season! I have been a member at Portsea since I was 6 years old and just a nipper. Portsea Surf Club has provided me with so many incredible opportunities and leadership development support from being an instructor on Bronze camp to becoming a Team Leader Beach Lifeguard on the Mornington Peninsula. I am excited to continue Portsea’s legacy of building excellent leaders!

First Aid Director

G’day, I’m Flynn and I’ve been a part of the club for as long as I can remember. I first became involved with the Surf Club as a young nipper in love with the ocean. From there, I got really into the competition side of the sport where I was the Portsea Junior State Team Captain in 2016. Since then I have completed my Bronze medallion, Silver medallion and recently completed the Advanced Lifesaving Course for my Gold Medallion. I have been fortunate enough to attend 3 Lifesaving Victoria Development Camps and meet lifesavers from all over the state. At the club, I am the Social Media Officer and an Environmental Officer, with the aim of engaging all of our members and thinking of new ways to improve the club. I live for the perfect northerlies and love getting out on a board with mates to catch some waves. If you see me out in the water or around the club, feel free to come say hi!

Hi, I’m Oscar and I’ve been a part of the club my whole life. Before I could even walk I’ve spent my summers down at the Back Beach and over the years I’ve worked through my awards and now have the amazing opportunity to be a part of the Operations Committee as the Deputy Competition Director. This season I’m going to be working closely with the rest of the Competition Subcommittee to grow our team, engaging as many members as possible. As well as this I patrol the beach both as a Peninsula Lifeguard and a captain of Cruisers patrol. I’m a sucker for Big Wednesday lines and live for a big shore break and perfect northerlies. I look forward to making this the best summer it can be for all our members.

Accomodation Director

Nik Rathmayr

Captain of the Mighty ducks patrol for my third season. My journey started on bronze camp 2016 and from there I found my love for the surf club and continued on to instructing, chief instructing and assessing multiple camps from nippers to silver camp. Including multiple hours patrolling, volunteering and living within the club. Hopefully you’ve seen me around. I have broadened my life saving skills outside Portsea SLSC and work under Life saving Victoria as a payed beach and jet ski lifeguard.

I joined PSLSC a short 6 years ago via the involvement of my youngest daughter Eliza in the Nipper program. Over this time The Club has become an integral part of our families Summer, as both Jessica and Eliza have taken on their own roles within various Education programs and Patrolling. When the call went out for members with relevant experience to put up their hand to help with a new merchandise range, I was naturally drawn in, having spent the best part of the last 30 years involved in sport branded merchandise, marketing and PR. Everyone has been very welcoming over this time and I encourage all members to become involved as much as possible to help out an amazing Club that prides itself on protecting the beach we all like to enjoy.
