BRONZE FULL OVERVIEW

The Portsea SLSC Bronze camp enables candidates to develop surf lifesaving skills and allows participants to attain their Bronze Medallion, therefore being permitted to patrol as part of a Portsea SLSC Patrol as a fully qualified lifesaver. The Bronze Medallion is the nationally recognized SLSA qualification that trains individuals in basic surf lifesaving skills and is the base / core qualification for patrolling members of surf lifesaving clubs in Australia.

On Bronze Camp, there will be a combination of practical work, fitness training and theory that all candidates will be expected to fulfil. Techniques and knowledge that Bronze Camp will provide candidates includes surf awareness skills, surf rescue skills, patrol operation awareness, emergency care and resuscitation techniques and IRB awareness skills.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand Surf Awareness Principles and Apply these to the Beach Environment
  • Utilise Surf Skills to Effectively Negotiate Surf
  • Perform Basic Surf Rescues using a variety of Techniques and Equipment
  • Participate in Patrol Operations, including in Emergency Situations
  • Provide Basic Emergency Care and Life Support to unconscious, unresponsive patients (with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and aided by an automated external defibrillator (AED))
  • Provide Basic First Aid Principles to Patients
  • Utilise SLSA Approved Radios and Other SLSA Communication Methods
  • Apply Spinal Management Techniques to Patients with Spinal Injuries
  • Work as Part of a Lifesaving Team

The 2023-24 Bronze Camp Program dates are:

The 2023-24 Bronze Camp will be run as a live-in camp at the Portsea SLSC. Participants MUST be able to attend all days of the program.

If Bronze camp becomes oversubscribed, applicants will be added to the waitlist and contacted if a place becomes available.

Bronze Camp PRIORITY Registration Opens:

CAMP ELIGIBILITY FOR 2023

All candidates must satisfy the following eligibility criteria to participate in Bronze Camp:

  • Be a current financial member of Portsea SLSC
  • Be 15 years of age by the 13th of December 2023
  • Be able to swim 400m in under 9 minutes in a pool of no less than 25 metres. (An accreditation swim will be held prior to the camp’s commencement.)
  • Complete all E-Learning Modules prior to the commencement of camp

For those seeking priority entry (an email confirmation will be sent to eligible members)

  • Completed Portsea Cadet Camp in 2022 (the previous season)
  • Completed 16 hours of Portsea SLSC volunteering, which must be made up of a minimum of 10 hours of patrolling on Portsea back beach and the remaining 6 hours either met by helping as a Nippers instructor/water safety volunteer OR participating in further patrolling.
  • Volunteered at one of Portsea SLSC’s major events the previous season (Portsea Swim Classic / Pier to Perignon / Portsea Bay to Surf).

BRONZE PROGRAM FEES

The cost for Bronze Camp is $665 per candidate.
