January 14, 2026The summer competition season has arrived and our Portsea team has travelled over to the west coast for the Torquay Jim Wall Iron, the Lorne Pier to Pub Swim and the Anglesea carnival.
Pumping surf at Torquay made for a spectacle at the Jim Wall Ocean Series Iron Man. Charlie and Gabe Cornwell had great results on the ski despite both being impacted by a craft pile-up on the finish line. Mackie Hunter and Xavier Purcell finished Top 10 in their swim finals, made the board finals and lined up for the finale Iron Man event. With prize money on the line, Ocean Series races attract athletes from Queensland and South Australia, making for tough competition.
The Lorne Pier to Pub Swim is a favourite for our Portsea swimmers, and again we had a strong contingent. Sophie Jacka was up first in the Junior race, placing 2nd, then backed up with a 3rd in the Open women, followed in by Mackie Hunter in 6th and Domi Hart 20th. The men’s field was star-studded with four Olympians swimming in the Superfish. Harvey Larke finished in 4th behind three of them! Xavier Purcell was 8th, Archer Larke 15th and Logan Brandi 25th.
The Anglesea Carnival followed the next day. It was great to see some younger faces on the comp team. Ed Barnaby, a member of the LSV High Performance Beach Squad took home a number of pennants racing Beach Relays in the Sand Arena, Olivia Barr placed 8th in the U17 Women’s Surf Race and Bellsy Mahon 4th in the Open. In the Open Men’s Surf Race, Robbe Dilissen place 5th. In the Men’s Ski Charlie Cornwell was also 5th, then paired with Cha Mahon to take home 6th place in the Mixed Double Ski. Down in the Youth Arena, Liv Barr had a crack at the tube race, getting a great start off the beach before falling victim to the side sweep that made tube swimming extremely difficult.
Well done to all those who raced and we look forward to seeing you back at the Point Leo Carnival on Sunday 8th February.
