The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) is a nationally recognised lifesaving award that provides individuals with essential surf lifesaving skills. The SRC program is designed for younger members who want to become active patrolling members of surf lifesaving clubs in Australia.
This course provides participants with skills and knowledge of surf awareness, aquatic rescue operations and resuscitation in order to participate in lifesaving operations.
Participants will learn how to:
- Apply knowledge of the surf environment including hazards and surf conditions;
- Apply surf skills and techniques for self-survival in the water while negotiating prevailing surf conditions with or without a flotation device;
- Safely prepare for and respond to a rescue with appropriate rescue and personal protective equipment;
- Safely use Surf Life Saving communications systems and radio equipment to support communications consistent with Surf Life Saving policies and procedures;
- Respond to an emergency situation requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR);
- Perform CPR with the aid of an automated external defibrillator (AED);
The training for the Surf Rescue Certificate includes both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Participants learn about water safety, identifying potential hazards in the surf environment, and understanding surf conditions. They also receive instruction on basic rescue techniques, such as wading, using rescue tubes, and performing simple rescues in a controlled environment.
The SRC is an entry-level qualification and serves as a stepping stone for those who wish to further their surf lifesaving journey by progressing to the SLSA Bronze Medallion and other higher-level certifications. It empowers individuals to participate in beach patrols, assist in rescues under supervision, and contribute to ensuring the safety of beachgoers.
